February….

sisters

sisters

It’s very cold here, about -20 degrees.. we have been spending a lot of time indoors snuggled up in blankets.  These are two sweet little dolls I made for two sisters birthday gifts.  They have beautifully soft alpaca wool hair.

This mermaid is one I started working on in December, she has beautiful hair.. slub wool and bits of handspun beauty blended in.

M has been busy needle felting.. mushrooms of course ;)   We all spent a few days with sore bellies sleeping the day away on the couch.  Of course M got better first and wanted to keep busy!

Perfect for Valentine’s Day <3

This is a cranberry hemp adjustable doll sling with an appliqued tie-dyed heart (tie-dying by Julia of course) modelled by my reluctant little princess and her snow leopard that we have to take everywhere ;)

This month is M’s 5th birthday she is wanting a special mermaid doll with pink and purple hair and blue and purple eyes.. I have the perfect handspun wool for it and I’m looking forward to making it.  I also have some beautiful new sling fabric’s that I just need to take photos of to get up on my website.  If only I had a baby to model them with or a mannequin that actually stood upright!  Stay warm everyone :)

Almost done..

dollscranberry-002-11
After a busy pre-holiday season I am looking forward to some rest and time to be with my family.  I can’t wait to go visit my sister after Christmas, I will feel so much better when I see her.
I just dropped off my last order for the season, a beautiful little doll for a holiday birthday.  I was so lucky to meet this sweet little baby when she was only a few days old and taught her mama how to use the PandaWrap and I feel very special that I got to make her birthday present for her first birthday.  Her doll has amazing bamboo/wool hair, it’s so soft, like silk and a wool knit dress.  We also sent along a cute little kid sling from us, so she can ‘wear her baby’

I still have presents to wrap and a sewing room to clean up and some baking to do.  Ooo and snow to shovel.. there is always snow to shovel.

My sister Leslie

Those of you who know me probably have heard.  My youngest sister Leslie was diagnosed with acute leukemia on Wednesday, December 10th.  She has started a blog of her journey to getting well from her hospital bed in the oncology clinic where she is undergoing chemotherapy.

Please take the time to leave her a comment.  Think of how much a kind word, a touch, a smile can mean to someone facing a huge battle.  Knowing there are people praying for you, thinking of you and sending you positive energy can make the world of difference when you need it.

eta : Leslie decided to make her blog private right now, so you can leave a comment to her on this post if you like and I will pass it on.

My sister is an amazing woman, she is kind and compassionate, she loves animals and children, she helps everyone she can.  She feels passionate about the environment and devoted her career to helping children.   She is the kind of woman that children adore, ready to play and have fun at any time.  Leslie has a whole house filled with pets that she loves dearly.  This next few weeks in the hospital, away from her husband and her family and her home will not be easy.  I just want her to know that we are all right there with her, supporting her every step of the way until she is back home again.

Sunny Days

I can’t even say my thankfulness for the results of last nights election!

I have been so very busy playing catch up this past month, I spent much of September and October very, very sick.  And I’m the kind of person that never gets sick or ever takes medicine.  Basically I will be sewing day and night until Christmas is over and then some!  Thankfully I am totally in the mood to sew and get organized :)

This is a sweet doll for my good friend’s little one.  She is heading over to the East Coast to meet her this holiday season.  She has beautiful blonde mohair boucle locks and a sunshine hand knit dress!  The beautiful tie dyed silk scarf in the background is made by the very talented Julia of Greencocoon

This is a sweet little custom doll I made over the summer that a mama wants to gift to her daughter.  She has beautiful mohair boucle hair a raspberry wool dress and linen eyelet bloomers.  I am excited for fall and spending more time cozied up on the couch doing handwork.  This month I will be having a booth at a fundraiser for our local La Leche League group.  I have a lot of work ahead of me in the next three weeks ;)

Funky slings free up new parents
August 15, 2008

CHRISTIE ZIMMER

“I love sewing, I love fabric and I love babies,” Tanja MacKenzie says.

We sit at a picnic table at Sunnyacres Park in Guelph watching the youngest of MacKenzie’s four children, four-year-old Maiya, and my five-year-old daughter collect leaves that have drifted into the wading pool.

Her eight-year-old son Jakob stops by the table and when he sees she’s taken out one of her handmade baby slings to show me, he points to it and says, “I help.”

It’s true. Occasionally, he helps his mom add the soft padding to her chic collection of pouch slings.

You see, in addition to keeping a watchful eye over her large family, MacKenzie is the owner, designer, seamstress and marketing director for her clothing and baby-wear label, Sewfunky.

This is a woman who knows something about time crunches.

She also knows her way around a sewing machine. So when she couldn’t find a comfortable baby carrier after the birth of her son Ben six years ago, she made one herself.

While out in Guelph with Ben snuggled into his handmade sling, she found herself answering one question with surprising regularity, “Where did you get that funky sling?”

And so Sewfunky was born.

MacKenzie offers her customers four types of slings which allow them, quite literally, to wear their babies while they get on with other tasks. These are not your generic baby carriers made from sturdy, serviceable material with plastic buckles and seatbelt straps. No, they are apparel, made for comfort and style. To accommodate the varied lifestyles of today’s parents and caregivers, MacKenzie’s slings are available in organic fabrics, stretchable cotton, cool linen, bamboo, sports mesh and even silk.

“Parents really need their hands and babies really want to be held. It’s about getting your hands and your life back,” MacKenzie says. “I just want parents to know that there’s an easier way.”

MacKenzie notes that slings give parents, grandparents and caregivers an easy opportunity to bond with babies and toddlers and to quickly calm a fussy child. The sling can also be put on prior to leaving the house. When you arrive at the grocery store or mall there is no need to struggle with straps and buckles. Simply transfer your little one from car seat or stroller to sling and be on your way.

As we chat, MacKenzie occasionally points out one of her slings, worn by a parent wandering past or through the park. Kasia Anderson is kind enough to stop by with 15-month-old son Avyn to show me how she uses her sling. She picks up a struggling Avyn, who until now has been happily toddling along on two feet. As soon as he is placed into the soft folds of the sling, he settles and begins to nurse. Another satisfied customer.

Christie Zimmer lives in Guelph. She can be contacted at christiezimmer@rogers.com.
